About This Spot

Stepping into The Drake Eatery is like finding a welcoming corner where the hum of friendly chatter and the gentle clinking of glasses create an inviting rhythm. Nestled in the heart of Victoria’s bustling market square, this casual beer hall feels both lively and laid-back—a perfect blend for those looking to slow down just enough to savor good company and thoughtful flavors. The pace here encourages relaxed discovery, where local brews flow alongside carefully crafted bites that surprise and satisfy without fuss.

The atmosphere is unpretentious yet warm, marked by a genuine sense of community that comes through in the easy smiles from the staff and the comfortable layout that invites lingering. It’s exactly the kind of spot where friends gather over shared plates and spirited conversations, with the vibrant energy of the neighborhood just outside the windows. Whether you’re sliding onto a bench by the market or settling in under the soft glow of warm lights, there’s a quiet comfort here that invites you to feel at ease.

Menu choices echo this balance of approachable creativity and local pride. Imagine raising a glass of a finely tuned pale ale or a hazy IPA, perfectly paired with something like a kimchi grilled cheese or a roast beef sandwich that carries familiar flavors in unexpected ways. The offerings show a thoughtful nod to seasonal ingredients and regional produce, inviting exploration through bold textures and nuanced spice rather than simple indulgence.

What lingers, beyond just the taste, is an experience shaped by the human moments—the friendly nod from the bartender who’s ready with a recommendation, the subtle satisfaction of a perfectly salted pretzel dipped in horseradish mustard, or discovering a new favorite from the curated flight of local beers. It’s a place where the joy of eating and drinking is matched by the ease of simply being, framed by a space that knows how to be lively without losing its intimacy.

For those who appreciate a genuine neighborhood gem that fosters connection over thoughtfully prepared food and a well-loved beer list, The Drake Eatery offers a quietly vibrant escape that feels like a fresh doorway into Victoria’s evolving culinary story.

Fantastic pub, plenty of local BC taps, staff that can advise on beer selection, great patio overlooking market square. I had a Banh Mi sandwich which was a really good meal, very fresh ingredients and a different take on banh mi than I’m used to back east. Friendly staff and patrons, good vibes, great food, great beer selection (however there is no table service, you order at the bar)

A chill eatery with a warm ambience. Solid chill staff. Recommend baba ganoush Tips: my tuna tacos were super delicious and flavourful, fresh ingredients ...but there was only three small dices pieces of tuna. Definitely not enough, even for a small person. Recommend adding some 'meat' to it. Otherwise, this spot should be a 5-star.

I needed a snack and a place to rest. I was greeted by friendly staff and found my seat. I was able to jot down a few thoughts when food arrived. I had the Kafka ‘Esque. A nice snack that came with pickle spears. A refreshing peach Ice tea. I grabbed a jumbo dill pickle to go. It was the best decision.

Stopped in for the first time while on one night vacation from Nanaimo. We took a chance while walking by and it paid off. The kimchi grilled cheese was excellent, the bread was so good. We also had the vegetarian squash tacos and they were yum. We had a side of peppers, I have never seen a simple but delicious dish like this. There is also huge selection of local beers. But the food was the highlight for me, the food is all actually made and not pulled out of a freezer and deep fried. Real food is hard to find, this is real food. This is a must stop in Victoria for amazing food and delicious drinks. We will be back. We ate our food too fast to take pictures of the food.

Y'know, I don't consider myself someone who would order bread and butter but I sure did enjoy their sourdough with Ceasar dressing butter (I know, and it's even better than it sounds). We also got the pretzel with a date and apple cider salami that was also fantastic. The staff was friendly and helpful. The beer selection (the main event, am I right?) was choice. My wife and I each got a flight to share and found many that we really enjoyed. My top pick was the raspberry IPA.

This place is a pillar to the community. They have 29 beers on tap. Something for everyone. Their food is great and seems to get better every year. The seating and decor have a genuine Victoria feel. One can enjoy a beer at the bar, or sit at a table, or even get comfy on the couch. I’ve been coming here for over a decade and I never tire of it. The staff are always friendly and helpful. Cheers to the next decade

Instinct is to gate-keep this place but I also want them to succeed and stay FOREVER. Go. Great beer selection. Effortlessly inclusive atmosphere. Terrific staff. Locally sourced handmade food. Everything good in this world. Just go.
